Shifting Gears

I was recently chatting with my son about his motorcycle.  He had some maintenance done on it and a bolt hadn't been properly tightened, so as he was riding (fortunately in a safe spot!), all of a sudden, he couldn't shift gears! He was able to figure out what had happened and then get it repaired correctly, but it got me thinking about Shifting Gears.

For lots of reasons, this past week felt like I was running in a high gear all week (part of why this is only getting done now!). It just felt like there was one thing after another, and I'd get to the end of the day and fall in bed. I didn't know it was going to be as full throttle as it turned out to be. In fact, when I looked at my calendar at the beginning of the week it actually didn't seem like it was going to be that bad. But, several unexpected circumstances popped up, which added to the schedule I already had, and that made it feel like I was running hot all week.

I don't think we were made to run in a high gear all the time. We need time to Shift Gears, slow down, and move at a different pace. Fortuantely, I also had some planned time away this weekend (I am currently writing this while I sit on an outdoor patio after a nap)!  I didn't know how much I was going to need it, but because I planned some down time to be able to Shift Gears and slow down a bit, it has felt extra helpful!

How often do you Shift Gears and slow down your pace? Are there ways you regularly plan for that in your life? Are there certain types of practices that give you a sense of calm and help you Shift Gears so you aren't always going at a high speed?

Here's to Shifting Gears in our lives this week (at least sometime)!

Be Well,
